Principal Investigator
Jeffrey Siegel, Ph.D., is Professor of Civil Engineering and the Bahen/Tanenbaum Chair in Civil Engineering. He holds joint appointments at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley as well as a B.Sc. from Swarthmore College. He is fellow of ASHRAE and a member of the Academy of Fellows of ISIAQ. His research interests include healthy and sustainable buildings, ventilation and indoor air quality in residential and commercial buildings, control of indoor particulate matter, the indoor microbiome, and moisture interactions with indoor chemistry and biology. Dr. Siegel is an active member of ISIAQ and ASHRAE and was an associate editor for the journal Building and Environment from 2014-2018. He teaches courses in indoor air quality, sustainable buildings, and sustainable energy systems. Prior to his position at the University of Toronto, Dr. Siegel was an Associate Professor at the University of Texas.
Identifying Factors that Impact Portable Air Cleaner Performance
This project examines how people and the environment can impact the performance of portable air cleaners through a literature review, modelling, and an intervention study.
Particle Filter System Control
This project uses novel simulation techniques to evaluate how different control strategies for central filtration systems and portable air cleaners to optimize health outcomes while reducing energy usage.
In-situ testing of portable air cleaners.
Portable air cleaners are commonly used to reduce the concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and other airborne pollutants in indoor environments. This project evaluates the in-situ performance of three portable air cleaners in residential sites, classrooms, and office environments using low-cost sensors.
Assessing and improving ventilation system performance in Canadian multi-unit residential buildings
Assess performance of the centralized pressurized corridor ventilation system vs. decentralized ERV system in two architecturally similar side-by-side high-rise MURBs in Toronto and investigate methods to improve performance through coupled energy and airflow simulations.
Estimating Indoor Airborne Concentrations of SARS-CoV-2
Using the quantitative filter forensics equation and metadata, along with RT-qPCR data from dust vacuumed off of portable air cleaner filters, I estimated indoor airborne concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 in covid-positive homes and in the community.
